Diverse notes on early Withyham Morleys

 

William Morley, yeoman of Withyham left a will, dated 24 September 1694:

  • testator is "very aged"
  • bequest to the poor of Withyham
  • to son George Morley 1/2 of rent from tenement "called the Chequer lying at Gravesend in the County of Kent which George Atkins(?) Esqr. now holdeth of me by lease" [perhaps a pub]
    • William, eldest son of George
  • to second son Richard Morley the other 1/2 of the Gravesend property
    • Richard son of Richard
  • daughter Anne, wife of Joseph Jones
    • children
  • daughter Bennett, wife of Robert Mills
    • William, already given a "good guift"
    • Robert
    • other children(?)
  • daughter-in-law Mary, widow
  • William Morley, deceased elsest son (and husband of Mary, according to the will below)

  • small bequests to maidservants, manservants, apprentices John Cripps and Mary Cripps
  • John Parker named as a overseer and trustee for some female heirs

  • one gold ring to "my loveing friend Henry Streatfield of Chiddingstone gent."
  • revokes all previous wills
  • Probate London February 1701 to son Richard Morley
    • margin note mentioning probate revoked, regranted(?) December 1702

William Morley, yeoman of Withyham left a will, dated 24 May 1699:

  • testator is "aged and weak in body"
  • bequest to poor of Withyham
  • daughter-in-law Mary Morley, wife of testator's deceased son William Morley
    • William and Mary's daughter Mary, unmarried and under 21
  • son Richard (only bequeathed five shillings -- was there an earlier settlement?)
    • Richard's son Richard
    • Richard's daughter Easther
  • daughter Bennett (wife of Robert Mills)
    • Robert Mills
    • William Mills
      • William's two daughters
    • other children of Robert Mills and Bennett Morley?
  • daughter Anne Jones
    • children of Anne?
  • deceased son George Morley
    • William son of George
      • children of William (not named)
  • bequests to maidservant and manservant
  • residue to "my kinsman Thomas Morley of Sevenoaks in the County of Kent yeoman and to the aforesaid Robert Mills my grandsonne" (also named co-executors)
  • revokes all previous wills
  • Probate 9 December 1702 London. Thomas Morley "nepotis ex fra" (brother's son?) and Robert Mills took oaths. [Some note about the testator's son Richard which I cannot decipher.]

For reasons unknown, William Morley of Withyham revoked his earlier will and replaced it with a vastly different one!
